"The Boy in the Striped Pajamas," a novel by John Boyne
The main character of this story, who is an eight-year-old boy named Bruno, narrates it as it takes place during World War II. It starts with his family moving from a plush house in Berlin to one near a concentration camp where his father has been posted as the commandant. He finds life difficult and boring in the new place hence he makes up his mind to know what lies beyond their compound. That is how he encounters Shmuel, another child imprisoned behind fence at the same age but Jewish by origin. The children make friends despite the barbed wire fence that separates them. Bruno continues to visit Shmuel frequently in order to take him food and have talks that uncover their innocence and naivety towards issues within their surroundings. Therein lays John Boyne’s masterful probing of themes such as friendship, innocence and cataclysmic effects of war thereby contrasting between lives of two boys and the horrors of Holocaust. As their friendship deepens, the novel explores the profound ramifications – often sad – that it has on both boys’ lives in a world ravaged by hatred and discrimination.
